A Word About Life and Things

The pacifier

Our grandson was 2-½ years old and still using a pacifier. We did not try to take it away from him, but said to him, that on his next birthday we were going to throw that pacifier into the trash. We reminded him many times of what we were going to do when the time came. About a month before his birthday, on a Sunday afternoon, while we were in the kitchen preparing food for our lunch, our grandson came out of his room, walked over to the trash can, lifted the lid, took that pacifier out of his mouth, and threw it into the trash can. He smiled at us, then turned around and went back to his room. That pacifier was no longer needed.

Too often we Christians are stuck in the needy part of life when we should already have outgrown the need for the pacifier, or as the Bible puts it, the milk of childhood. We are dependent on other people to help us with our needs. We are running to counselors for our help. Sometimes these things are needed, but many times the same people show up at the counselors, with the same problems, over and over.

We as Christians, need a strong backbone, or as the US Marines would say “Man-Up.” The enemy is always going to come against us. No one is excluded from the attack of the enemy. We cannot overcome the enemy if we do not know what God has to say about our problems. God’s word has covered everything we need to overcome our enemies. God does not leave us defenseless. We are defenseless if we do not study His word. His word gives us authority over our enemies. Our strength comes from God’s word. If we are going to become full age, and no longer babes, we can only do it by God’s word. We no longer want or need the pacifier. We have God’s word in us, and we will overcome all of our enemies.

      New King James Version
Hebrews 5:12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food.
13 For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe.
14 But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
